Start Here: The Length Retention Project

Welcome to Dear Little Me - a space for every woman who has ever stared at her afro in the mirror and thought, “Why won’t my hair just grow?” If you’ve tried every product, every routine, every YouTube method and still feel stuck, you’re in the right place.

This blog isn’t about chasing perfect curls or copying someone else’s wash day. It’s about understanding your own type 4 hair, keeping the length you already grow, and healing the stories you were told about your coils along the way.

My Story: From Breakage to Intention

For years, my hair felt like a cycle I couldn’t escape:

- Grow a little

- Break a lot

- Start over again

I blamed everything — my genetics, my “stubborn” hair, even myself. I thought I just wasn’t trying hard enough.

What finally changed things wasn’t a miracle product. It was slowing down and asking better questions:

- What does my hair actually need?

- How does it respond to water, products, and styles?

- What habits are quietly stealing my length?

Dear Little Me was born from that shift...from frustration to curiosity, from shame to intention.

What “Length Retention” Really Means

Length retention isn’t just about chasing long hair. It’s about:

  • Keeping the length your hair naturally grows

  • Protecting your ends from constant damage

  • Building routines that respect your time, energy, and lifestyle

You might be growing plenty of hair — you’re just losing it faster than you can see it. This blog is here to help you change that.

The type 4 Hair Journey: Our Core Pillars

Everything on Dear Little Me comes back to four main pillars:

1. Moisture

Learning how to hydrate your coils and keep them soft for more than one day.

Think: LOC (Liquid, Oil, Cream) vs LCO (Liquid, Cream, Oil), deep conditioning, night‑time protection.

2. Gentle Handling

Treating your hair like the delicate fabric it is.

Think: detangling without tears, low‑tension styles, kinder tools.

3. Protective Styling (Done Safely)

Using styles that actually protect your hair — not just look cute on Instagram.

Think: tension awareness, safe install and take‑down, scalp care.

4. Mindset & Self‑Compassion

Letting go of the idea that your hair is “too difficult” or “not good enough.”

Think: unlearning old rules, setting realistic routines, celebrating small wins.

How to Use This Blog

To make things easy, I’ve organised the blog into simple categories you’ll also see on the Home page:

- The Length Retention Project

Deep dives into routines, tracking progress, and building habits that help you keep your length.

- Hair Science

Breaking down porosity, density, ingredients, and how type 4 hair actually behaves — in plain language.

- Product Reviews

Honest, data‑driven thoughts on products: what worked, what didn’t, and who they might be best for.

- My Journey

Personal wins, setbacks, and lessons from my own type 4 hair story — so you don’t feel alone in yours.

You can start anywhere, but if you’re new, I recommend:

1. “Wash Day Science” – to rebuild your wash routine from the ground up.

2. “Protective Styling: Are Your Styles Really Protective?” – to check if your styles are helping or hurting.

3. “Moisture Retention 101” – to finally understand why your hair keeps drying out.
