My No Bleach Hair Transformation: From Black to Copper Brown Hair

Changing hair color without bleach can be a challenge, especially for afro-textured hair. I recently took on this challenge using a no bleach method that gave me a fresh, bold look while supporting my hair growth journey. This post shares my experience coloring my hair with Cream of Nature C42 Light Golden Blonde, followed by a mix of Adore Hair Colours Spicy Cajun and Paprika. I also detail how I styled my hair afterward with a blowout and straightening, plus what I learned along the way.

Choosing a No Bleach Method for Afro Hair

Bleaching can be harsh on afro hair, often leading to dryness, breakage, and slow growth. I wanted to avoid those risks while still achieving a vibrant color change. Using Cream of Nature C42 Light Golden Blonde gave me a warm, golden base without the damage bleach can cause. This product is designed to gently lift color and brighten hair with minimal processing.

After the initial lightening, I rinsed out the mixture, dried my hair then mixed one bottle of Adore Hair Colours Spicy Cajun with half a bottle of Paprika. These semi-permanent dyes added a rich, fiery red tone. I was originally going for a copper brown look but it came out more red than I would have liked. The no bleach approach meant I had to be patient and careful with application, but the results were worth it.

Step-by-Step Coloring Process

Here’s how I approached the coloring:

  • Preparation: I started with clean, dry hair. No product buildup helps the color absorb evenly.

  • Applying Cream of Nature C42: I actually used 2 boxes of this as I heard just 1 wouldn't lift your hair from black to blonde. I applied this all over my hair, focusing on even coverage. The formula is creamy and easy to work with.

  • Processing time: I left the color on for the recommended time, checking frequently to avoid over-processing.

  • Rinsing and drying: After rinsing, I towel dried my hair before moving to the next step.

  • Mixing Adore colors: I combined Spicy Cajun and Paprika in a bowl, mixing thoroughly.

  • Applying the red mix: I applied the mixture evenly, ensuring full saturation.

  • Final rinse: After the processing time, I rinsed with cool water to lock in the color.

This method avoided bleach completely, which helped maintain my hair’s strength and moisture.

Styling After Coloring: Blowout and Straightening

Once my hair was colored and dried, I moved on to styling. Afro hair can shrink significantly when wet or curly, so blowouts and straightening help show off the color and length.

  • Blowout: I used a heat protectant spray to shield my hair from damage. Then, I sectioned my hair and used a blow dryer with a comb attachment to stretch and smooth the strands.

  • Straightening: After the blowout, I flat-ironed my hair in small sections, keeping the heat at a moderate level to avoid damage.

  • Finishing touches: I applied a light serum to add shine and reduce frizz.

The straightened hair revealed the full effect of the color blend, with the golden blonde base glowing under the red highlights.

Starting My Hair Growth Journey

This transformation is more than just a new look. It marks the beginning of a focused hair growth journey. Coloring without bleach means I can experiment with style and color without sacrificing hair health. Here’s what I’m focusing on moving forward:

  • Moisture retention: Keeping hair hydrated is key to growth. I plan to use deep conditioning treatments regularly.

  • Protective styling: Styles that reduce manipulation and breakage will help maintain length.

  • Scalp care: Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. I’ll be incorporating gentle scalp massages and oils.

  • Consistent trims: Trimming split ends prevents damage from traveling up the hair shaft.

Tracking my progress with photos and notes will help me stay motivated and adjust my routine as needed.
